Salamis, an island so close to Athens
It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to our upcoming cycling event. On the 12th of March, we will embark on our third island excursion to the splendid Salamis, the largest island of the Saronic Gulf, spanning over an area of 96.09 square kilometers.
Salamis is not only the closest island to Athens but also boasts breathtaking beauty and offers easy cycling routes, despite being misunderstood by many. It is noteworthy that Salamis served as a source of inspiration for the renowned Euripides and was also the last abode of the great Greek hero, George Karaiskakis. In addition, the prominent Greek poet, Angelos Sikelianos, called Salamis his home for several years.
We will commence our journey from the picturesque port of Salamis, Paloukia. Our route will take us to the capital of Salamis and then to the Monastery of Faneromeni. From there, we will proceed along the coast towards the bay of Elefsinos, where the windswept house of Angelos Sikelianos is located. Our journey will continue along the coast until we reach Aianteio, where we will begin our ascent and then descend to Kanakia beach. At Kanakia bay, we will take a well-deserved break and replenish our energy reserves.
During our descent towards Kanakia bay, we will come across the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos and the small chapel of Agios Ioannis Kalyvitis. On our way back, we will traverse the rich pine forest of Salamis and make a stop at Selinia, the site of the historic Naval Battle of Salamis that took place in 480 BC.
We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us on this exhilarating journey and explore the beauty of Salamis with us.
