Description
Cavo Doro, also known as Cape Cafirea, is a promontory on the southeastern tip of the island, and it has given its name to the wider area. The formal etymology of the name refers that it derives from the Italian term Cavo Duro that means rough, hard sea passage. Indeed, the channel was considered one of the most dangerous areas for seafarers in the entire Aegean sea. However, local legends recount that the name comes from the Greek word “ntoros” that means “loud noise”, and was given to the peninsula because of the loud sound of crashing waves. Whatever the truth may be, the Cape offers a dramatic view that warrants its fame.
