Description
Dyo Choria is home to one of the island’s most picturesque central squares, offering a unique panoramic view of the Aegean sea and the nearby islands. The abundance of water, a precious and scarce resource in the Cyclades, is evident here as well, proven by the super-centenarian plane trees. The village is surrounded by greenery and has a plethora of fresh water springs.
The architecture in Dyo Choria is typically Cycladic with white sugar houses and pretty little paved paths, although the curved stone archways and narrow alleys radiate a distinct medieval atmosphere. The inhabitants have decorated the village and gave it a joyful character by painting doors, windows, and facades in vivid colors, matching the beautiful flowers that adorn their balconies and entrances.
According to the local legend, it was the Nymphs, each one representing one of the five natural sources, that blessed the village with abundance in waters and beauty. Whether that is true or not is anyone’s guess; the fact is that Dyo Choria is one of the prettiest villages on the island, and a stop by its amphitheatrical central square with the beautifully carved cave fountains, is a definite must for every visitor.
