Description
Situated near Korthi Bay, ‘Grias to Pidima’ is a beautiful sandy beach and one of the most popular landmarks in Andros. It owes its fame to the impressive, 15m high monolith that stands out in the landscape and the accompanying legend. According to tradition, an old woman of Andros betrayed the inhabitants by revealing a secret underground passage towards the castle of Faneromeni, where they were fortified. The resulting massacre was too much for the old woman’s conscience, and she committed suicide by jumping off a cliff near this area. Her body was ‘turned to stone’, an eternal reminder of her guilt. Hence the name ‘Grias to Pidima’, which means ‘Old woman’s jump’ in Greek.
