Description
This remarkable monument of ancient mining is located in the area of Cylinder Mills. Here, excellently preserved, in the same site that were mined from the warm crust of the Earth, giant monolithic pillars,12 metres in length, called cylinders by locals, can be found. A military alert, perhaps the imminent threat of the fall of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century AD, led to the withdrawal of the Roman Guard ceasing its function.
This green marble, the Karystos’ stone adorns a great number of historical monuments some of which are the Andrianos Library in Athens and the Imperial Markets of Augustus and Trajan in Rome.
