Description
The quarries thrived during the Roman period (1st century BC-2nd century BC) making the region of Karystias well known to the Roman world. The Karystian marble, widely known as “cipollino”, was imported to all parts of the Roman Empire and it was mainly used as a building material. It was called “cipollino” by the Romans which means little onion,due to its particular texture that resembled that of a chopped onion.
