Description
The sacred rock of Acropolis, the symbol of Athens, dominates at the centre of the city and it is visible from everywhere in the centre. Its first inhabitants date back from the prehistoric era. Gradually, it evolved to the sacred area wholly dedicated to goddess Athena. On its top lies the magnificent temple of Parthenon, the fabled monument of Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike. On the circumference area of the rock,there is an abundance of caves, sanctuaries and monuments of various periods including the ancient theatre of Dionysus and the Roman Odeon of Herodes Atticus amongst the most known ones.
