Description
The capital of Tinos, called Chora, is the harbour-town surrounding the main port in the south part of the island. The earliest signs of human settlement in the area date back to 6th century BC and several findings suggest an active and prosperous community established here from the archaic period to the end of antiquity. The danger faced by pirate invasions led to the abandonment of this vulnerable area, and it was not until the 18th century when the town was re-established and gradually took its present form.
Chora is by far the largest settlement in Tinos and the primary residential and market hub of the island. Apart from many shops, cafes, and restaurants, there are several historic buildings and places to visit, like the archaeological museum, the art gallery and the cultural institution of Tinos. However, everything is overshadowed by the imposing church of Virgin Mary, perhaps the most famous religious monument in the whole of Greece.
